The 19^th World Forum of Catastrophe Programmes (WFCP) was held in Paris from 15 to 18 September, at the invitation of CCR.

The meeting brought together representatives from 15 countries and organisations involved in natural catastrophe risk coverage, through a wide variety of national schemes (reinsurance pools, public reinsurance, public insurance, funds). All share the common objectives of protecting insurability and strengthening the resilience of societies and economies.

The forum was also open to representatives from countries considering the creation of such mechanisms, including Germany, South Africa and Greece. Reflecting the significance of these issues, some international organisations were also represented.

As natural hazards evolve and their consequences can have a lasting impact on populations, territories and economies, the forum provided a space for dialogue and for sharing experience on existing coverage schemes, the conditions for their effectiveness and ways to improve them in the context of climate change.

Participants discussed responses to catastrophic events, arrangements for cooperation between public and private stakeholders, and the challenges of prevention and climate change adaptation.

Bringing together organisations from around the world, the event illustrates the growing interest in these programmes, given the benefits they deliver to the populations and nations they serve. All participants declared their readiness to help any interested country design and develop a programme tailored to its specific needs. Recent developments in Europe, both in terms of regulation and claims experience, will probably require European members of the network to strengthen their cooperation and deepen their understanding of these issues of common interest.
