2018 warmest year since 1900
2018 was the warmest year on record since 1900 according to Météo France with an average annual temperature 1.4° C higher than average. As was the case in 2017, France was once again adversely affected by the intense swelling and shrinking of clay soils. Unlike the drought of 2017, the drought of 2018 began only in the summer as a result of low levels of rainfall and periods of extreme temperatures. Shortages of rainfall of up to 10 and 20% were recorded in northern France with up to 30% in Alsace. Drought is the second greatest cause of losses for which compensation is provided through France's Natural Disaster compensation scheme.
