Get Ready - Adapting to cope with natural disasters - Press release

A documentary on natural disaster insurance in the face of tomorrow’s climate

11/19/2015

CCR and News Assurances Pro, co-producers of "Get Ready", join forces to raise awareness to the vulnerability of our societies to natural hazards.
The insurance sector is particularly affected by the issue of global warming as it bears a substantial portion of the cost of natural disasters, a cost that will no doubt increase considerably in the future.
The 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris is an opportunity to draw attention to this issue, but also to inform about the various compensation schemes that exist, to think about their adaptation and to lay emphasis on the prevention efforts needed to protect ourselves from natural disasters.

The twenty-six-minute long documentary "Get Ready" was made to serve this purpose. It presents expected climate changes and their impacts, the ensuing economic issues in the light of existing insurance and prevention systems, and the possible ways in which these systems can be adapted to increase our societies’ resilience.

A preview of “Get Ready” will take place at the conference organised by CCR as part of the COP 21, under the presidency of Margareta Wahlström, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction and Head of the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, and titled:

 CCR

The public reinsurance company Caisse Centrale de Réassurance is at the core of the French insurance system for damages caused by natural disasters.
Its expertise in the matter contributes to the understanding by insurers and public authorities of household and business exposure to climate hazards. CCR also helps reducing their vulnerability being involved in the definition of prevention and territorial planning measures in the most highly exposed areas.
Besides, playing a central role in the management of natural hazard in France, CCR also conducts research to assess the impact of climate change in the frequency and intensity of extreme natural events.
