While the dramatic flooding of last month is still on everyone’s minds, The 7th edition of the Journée CCR CAT addresses the issue of what actions can be taken to control the cost of natural disasters.

06/30/2016

On this occasion, CCR provides an overview of the cost of natural disasters in France over the past twenty years and explores how things should develop by 2050. The company, in cooperation with the French Institute of Public Opinion (Ifop), also presents the results of a survey showing how the French perceive natural disasters and their reaction to prevention.

The results of the recent survey conducted by CCR and Ifop reveal a need for information (half of all respondents stated that they were insufficiently informed of matters concerning natural risks), satisfaction with the efficiency of the natural disaster insurance compensation scheme (almost 80% of French respondents estimate that they are sufficiently insured) and broad awareness of the stakes of prevention (92% of those surveyed claimed they would refrain from renting or purchasing real estate located in an area exposed to natural disasters). Despite often-heard claims, the natural disaster scheme does not take responsibility away from French citizens.

The report on the cost of natural disasters established by CCR aims at heightening awareness about natural risks. Between 1989 and 2013, natural disasters cost an average of € 965 million per annum, or a total of € 24 billion over the entire period. The cost of flooding alone represents more than half of this amount with an average of € 540 million in insured property. The floods that affected France last month were remarkable due to their size and extent: no less than 34 departments and 1,421 municipalities were affected, for an insured cost that is expected to reach upwards of € 1,2 billion in total.
