Serge Planton, Climatologist, Météo France

Serge Planton, 62, is a general civil, forestry and water resource engineer. A graduate of France's prestigious Ecole Polytechnique, he also holds a graduate's degree from the National School of Meteorology (ENM). For twenty years, Mr. Planton directed the workgroup on climate research at the National Center of Meteorological Research (CNRM), a combined initiative conducted by Météo-France and the National Center For Scientific Research (CNRS). He has conducted research in the area of climate modeling and studies involving ocean-atmosphere interactions. More recently, his research work has been focused on the issue of detecting climate changes through observation and the causes of such changes. He is co-editor of and expert reviewer for the assessment reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Mr. Planton has also participated in the drafting and development of several reports on climate change including the series of reports on 21st century climate change scenarios for France. He is currently involved in the climate change awareness project "Train du Climat" in France as a member of the project team representing the scientific community.
