CCR devotes this new edition to the lessons learned from Hurricane Irma that devastated the islands of Saint Martin and Saint Barthelemy in the early morning hours of September 6, 2017. The event caused 11 fatalities. Hurricane Irma caused over 86 billion euros in damages to several islands in the North Atlantic. In France, insured damages covered by the Natural Disaster compensation scheme will amount to 2 billion euros according to CCR. One year later, the islands have not as yet recovered the totality of their infrastructure and economic activity.

Philippe Gustin, Prefect of Guadeloupe, Interministerial Delegate for the Reconstruction of Saint Barthelemy and Saint Martin Islands advises implementing a responsible and controllable urban policy so as to ensure a sustainable rebuilding program, to train professionals and to inform the population of the necessity of compliance with prescribed para-seismic and para-hurricane measures. Not every French territory faces the same level of exposure to natural disaster risk. The Antilles are particularly vulnerable to hurricanes. Bertrand Labilloy, Chief Executive Officer of CCR, looks back on this exceptional disaster event and the role played by public reinsurance in meeting the challenges posed.
